초록

This paper argues that the deletion of [t, d], which is morpho-phonologically motivated, undergoes several steps before the target consonant is deleted in English. This type of consonant deletion can be a problem to a rule-based and a constraint-based theoretical framework, which employs only one mapping from input to output because such theoretical frameworks do not reflect procedural stages a segment goes through before that segment is deleted. In order to illustrate procedural nature of deletion, we adopt the Harmonic Serialism theory which can demonstrate gradual deletion processes. The selection of deletion targets is based on markedness concepts in linguistics, positional faithfulness, and perceptual mapping. The study claims that the least marked coronal obstruent stops become weak by being unreleased at syllable coda and this lenited segment undergoes deletion when it is surrounded by segments with [+cons] feature specifications. This procedural processes are explained by the consistent constraint ranking applying to each step of the analysis. The current analysis can also explain variant realizations of this optional consonant deletion in English by using theory internal concepts.
