Teachers' Beliefs about Korean Language Teaching and their Practices: A Case Study

본 연구는 미국 중서부에 위치한 한 한글학교의 교사들이 한국어 교육에 대해 갖고 있는 신념이 무엇인지, 그리고 그 신념과 교실활동 간에는 어떠한 관계가 있는지를 고찰한다. 다섯 명의 한국어 교사들을 대상으로 인터뷰를 실시하고 그 중 두 명의 교사들의 수업 관찰을 바탕으로 분석한 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 다섯 명의 교사들은 한글학교의 교육은 한국어와 한국문화를 동시에 가르치는데 초점을 맞추어야 한다는 신념을 보였다. 둘째, 그들은 한국어 1,2,3, 한국문화 1,2,3, 한국어회화 1,2,3 및 한국어회화와 한국문화라는 과목이 편성‧운영되는 것이 적절하다고 보았으며, 미국거주 학생들에게는 대체로 구조중심 실라버스보다 의사소통중심 실라버스가 효과적이라는데 동의를 하였다. 셋째, 교재는 한국문화를 이해하는데 적합한 주제들이 포함되어야 하며, 교재 안팎의 흥미있는 사실적인 자료들도 수업에 사용해야 효과적이라고 생각하였다. 특히 읽기와 쓰기에서 비교적 다양한 기법을 사용한 두 명의 교사들의 수업을 관찰한 결과, 그들의 신념과 실천 사이에는, 최근 외국어 교사들의 신념 연구에서에서처럼, 서로 일치하는 점이 대부분이었으나 일치하지 않은 점도 부분적으로 나타났다.
