초록
When a text does not provide definite gender information of a character, we might use a gender stereotype to infer the more likely gender. It is strongly supported by academic research that the stereotypical gender information associated with role names is typically incorporated into a representation of an individual immediately and automatically as soon as a role name is read. Semantic priming refers to a general tendency for language users to show facilitation in their processing of words, with facilitation arising due to language users’ previous experience with words that include related or shared meanings. This priming represents an automatic process of activating mental representations of words. Similar to the process of semantic priming, social role names and their gender stereotypes are stored together or are linked in the language users' mind and get activated through the links like semantically related words in memory. The activation of gender information also undergoes automatic process. As for the pedagogical implications, when instructors and textbook writers are aware of the gender stereotype, they can better help to avoid improper usage of such information for the English L2 learners.
