Stereotypes have been considered as long-lasting knowledge structures because they are believed to be persistent over time. According to the social role theory, social groups should have dynamic stereotypes in so far as their typical social roles are perceived to change over time. In relation to men and women, sex differences are alleviated because of increasing similarity in the roles of men and women. In addition, the female stereotype should be particularly dynamic because the roles of women change more often than men. In general, women’s roles and stereotypes are perceived to be changing more rapidly over time than those of men. In light of social role prediction studies, this study demonstrates that gender stereotypes reflect perceptions with regard to the social roles of both men and women; and dynamic aspects of these stereotypes are perceived also by Korean speakers.
