본고에서는 조선어학연구회 기관지 『정음』(1934-1941)에 게재된 논문을 살펴보면서, 당시 조선어학계가 조선어 연구의 목표를 어떻게 설정했고 어떠한 연구방법론을 모색하였는지 그리고 이를 통해 성취한 바가 무엇이었는지를 설명하였다. 따라서 본고의 논의는 『정음』을 배제한 상태에서 이루어졌던 국어학사의 공백을 메우고, 『정음』 발간기(1934-1941)에 이루어진 조선어 연구의 지형을 균형 있게 살필 수 있는 기반을 마련한다는 의미가 있다. 2장에서는 ‘실천적 언어 연구’에서 ‘과학적 언어 연구’로의 전환이라는 맥락에서 『정음』의 논문 게재 경향이 변화하는 양상을 살폈다. 그리고 주류적 연구 경향이 역사비교 언어학으로 바뀌는 변화가 필진의 교체와 연동되어 이루어졌음을 지적하면서, 이러한 변화로 철자법을 둘러싸고 극한 대립을 보였던 『한글』과 『정음』 간 진영 경계가 희미해졌음을 밝혔다. 3장에서는 『정음』의 논문을 ‘철자법 관련 논의’, ‘언어 이론 관련 논의’, ‘언어정책 관련 논의’ 등으로 나누어 살펴보면서, 이를 통해 드러난 언어 연구의 관점과 지향을 알아보았다. 이를 통해 본고에서는 『정음』을 관통하는 문제의식이 역사적 접근을 통해 언어 문제 및 언어 현상을 해결하고 설명하는 것임을 밝혔다.
Abstract
This paper examines the articles published in the journal of the Korean Linguistic Association, Jeongeum (1934-1941), to explain how the Korean linguistic community set goals for Korean language research, what research methods they pursued, and what they achieved. In doing so, this discussion can be said to fill a gap in the history of Korean language studies, which has been done without Jeong-eum, and to lay the groundwork for a balanced look at the topography of Korean language research during the period of Jeongeum’s publication. In Chapter 2, I examined the changing trends in the publication of articles in Jeongeum in the context of the transition from ‘practical linguistic research’ to ‘scientific linguistic research’. And it pointed out that the shift in the mainstream towards historical and comparative linguistics was accompanied by a change in authorship, and showed that this change blurred the lines between the Hangeul and Jeongeum camps, which had been polarized over orthography. In Chapter 3, I examined the articles in Jeongeum by dividing them into ‘spelling-related discussions’, ‘linguistic theory-related discussions’, and ‘language policy-related discussions’, and explored the perspectives and orientations of language research that they reveal. In doing so, this paper has shown that the aim of Jeongeum is to solve and explain linguistic problems and linguistic phenomena through a historical approach.
