불교윤리의 일상생활화 방안 모색 -불교적 ‘작은 윤리’를 제안하며-

개인적으로 한국불교가 직면한 우선적인 과제는 불교사상 일반을 둘러싼 형이상학적 논의의 지속이 아니라 어떻게 하면 이를 현대정보사회 속에서도 적용 가능한 행위원리로 거듭날 수 있도록 새롭게 가다듬을 것인가라는 윤리학적 고민이라고 생각한다. 왜냐하면 오늘날의 종교소비자들은 자신의 삶과 직접 부딪히는 다양한 도덕적 갈등상황들을 가능하면 현장에서 곧바로 해결할 수 있는 구체적이고도 실질적인 행위지침, 즉 생활 속의 부처님을 갈구하고 있는 것으로 판단되기 때문이다. 이 논문은 그런 관점에서 성(동성애)과 육식에 대한 불교윤리의 입장 및 업과 윤회사상의 현대 윤리적 의미 등에 대해 간략하게 검토해 본 것이다. 여기서 필자가 제안하는 접근방식은 불교윤리의 간소화, 즉 ‘작은 윤리’의 즉각적인 실천이다. 이에 대해서는 앞으로 더 많은 논의가 필요할 것으로 생각된다.
Abstract
I think, individually, that the priority task of Korean Buddhism with which it confront is not any continuous metaphysical controversies concerning Buddhist thoughts in general, but some ethical worry about how we Buddhists could renew the tradition into the applicable action-principle in the modern information society. For today's religion-consumers seems to call for a certain concrete and material action-guide that would work out many moral conflict-situations which they encounter directly in their everyday life as possible as on the spot, that is to say, the historical Buddha in their own real life. This essay examines the Buddhist position of sex(homosexuality) and excessive meat-eating, and then a modern ethical meaning of karma/samsara thought from the above viewpoint. Here I propose an approach which emphasizes on the simplification of Buddhist ethics, so to speak, the immediate practice of Buddhist 'minimal ethics'. I ,of course, feel that this question needs further discussions for the next coming years.
