Abstract
The Buddha advised his followers not to hurt or to cause injury to other religions but to listen to the doctrines professed by others if helpful. He could maintain open minded attitude to other religions for He did’nt absolutize his own dharma. With his famous Parable of the Raft, He likened His teachings to a raft for crossing a fast-flowing river. The Spirit of Buddha’s Tolerance was succeeded by king Asoka’s policy of tolerance and Wonhyo’s Theory of Reconciliation. As the world has become global and plural, the exclusive and militant religions transformed their attitude from absolutism to all-inclusive attitude and to pluralism. Their attitude towards other religions is converging to the Buddhist tolerance model. The Catholic Church from the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965), the WCC from the Barr Statement (1990), and Islam influenced by the secularization tendency and human right movement began to change their attitude towards other religions. In order to make the world of religious tolerance Korean Buddhists should strengthen their efforts; ⑴ to study and engage in dialogue with neighboring religions including Christianity as well as Islam, ⑵ to seek consensus on the necessary minimum of common values in our society which can be affirmed by all religions despite their dogmatic differences, ⑶ to reach agreements on the principle of the separation of religion and politics, and on no recriminations among religions, and ⑷ to put the UNESCO’s Declaration of Principles on Tolerance(1995) into practice in the religious world. World peace begins from religious tolerance which is respect, acceptance and appreciation of other religions.
