속담 속에 반영된 불교어휘의 언어인류학적 연구

속담 속에는 전통적인 민속언어 외에도 일상적인 생활 속에서 사용하고 있는 사회 및문화적인 용어도 포함되어 있다. 그러므로 속담은 전통문화와 일상적인 생활문화를 제공해주는 독특한 언어 텍스트이다. 특히 한국의 속담 속에 나타나는 다양한 문화용어들은 불교, 통과의례, 샤머니즘, 민간신앙 등 다양하고 폭 넓은 영역과 밀접하게 연계되어있는 경우가 많다. 이러한 맥락에서 불교 관련 속담에는 다양한 불교어휘가 포함되어있으며, 이러한 불교어휘는 오랜 시간 동안 언중(言衆)들의 일상적인 언어생활 속에서첨삭되고 다듬어져서 오늘날까지 전승되고 있다. 본 논문은 언어인류학적 분석을 통하여 불교 관련 속담 속에 기술되어 있는 불교어휘의 사용양상과 그 속에 반영되어 있는불교 관련 언어문화에 대해서 고찰하였다. 언어인류학의 시각에서 속담 속의 불교어휘를 분석하기 위하여 170여개의 불교 관련속담을 기초자료로 삼았고, 언어인류학의 주요한 연구방법인 민속분류법(folk taxonomy) 과 성분분석법(componential analysis)을 비롯하여 통사적 금기어를 분석의 틀로 사용하였다. 우선 민속분류법으로 불교 관련 속담 속의 불교어휘를 분석해보면 주제별로 크게 여섯 가지로 분류할 수 있는데, 첫째 불교의 ‘중’과 승(僧), 둘째 불교의 신(神)과 신적 존재, 셋째 절, 사찰(寺刹) 그리고 법당(法堂)과 전(殿), 넷째 불교관련 의례와 의례도구, 경전 및 생활 민구(民具)와 복식, 다섯째 불교에서 음식과 술, 여섯째 불교의 세계관과 기념일 그리고 ‘중’과 부처(님)의 신체 등이다. 다음으로 성분분석법으로 속담 속의 불교어휘를 고찰해보면 특히 두드러지는 것은 ‘중’ 혹은 승(僧)과 관련한 불교어휘가 가지는 다양한 의미적 성분(semantic components)이다. 즉 모두 열 가지 종류의 의미적 성분을 내포하고 있는데, ① 불구(不具), ② 능력, ③ 나이, ④ 행동 및 행위, ⑤ 좋지 않은 상황 및 상태, ⑥ 역할, ⑦ 어리석음 및 엉큼함, ⑧ 인명(人名), 별명, 호(號), 칭호, ⑨ 여성, ⑩ 지명 및 지역 둥이다. 덧붙여서 속담 속의 불교어휘를 통사적 금기어라는 시각에서 살펴보면 불교어휘가 가미된 통사적 금기어는 조건절과 결과절을 가진 금기어로 속담의 형식을 가지면서 조건절의 내용과 관련하여 특정한 행동에 대한 금기를 반영한다. 즉 불교어휘가 포함되어있는 통사적 금기어는 속담이라는 구조를 통하여 압축되고 비유적인 표현으로 바뀌었지만, 그 내면에는 통사적 구조를 가지면서 불교와 관련해서 특정한 행위를 ‘하지 말라’는금기를 담고 있다.
Abstract
Korean proverbs provide various aspects of Korean society and culture. Proverbs, in general, are transmitted from generation to generation. Proverbs often contain traditional folk terms as well as contemporary social and cultural terms of daily life. Hence proverbs are an unique linguistic text providing Korean traditional culture and tradition. In particular, Korean proverbs cover broad spheres of terms concerning Buddhism, rites of passage, Shamanism, folk belief, etc. This paper focuses on Buddhist terms inside Korean proverbs from standpoint of linguistic anthropology. Namely this research deals with Buddhist terms and culture by examining practical language usages inside Korean proverbs. In linguistic anthropology proverbs are one of the major interest in scrutinizing relationship between ethnology and oral folk culture. As an language of metaphor proverbs connotate ethnographical details and social situations. In this research over 170 proverbs concerning Buddhism found inside Korean proverbs are the principal sources for investigation. Since Buddhism was and still is an influential belief among Koreans frequent language usages of proverbs regarding Buddhism are common and natural. Some results of analysing Korean Buddhistic proverbs are as followed: (1) terms for Buddhist god and deities, monks, temples, holy texts are most frequently used, (2) Buddhist terms concerning monks have various semantic components, (3) usages of morphological taboo phrases. In sum, Buddhistic proverbs visualize practical usages of language in both traditional and contemporary Korean society. Furthermore the linguistic anthropological research on various usages of Buddhistic proverbs is an efficient approach to intrigue future Korean linguistics.
