Abstract

This study aims at examining the strategy and the value to register Korean buddhist temples in World Cultural Heritage. In this study were examined integrity, authenticity, protection and systematic management that World Cultural Heritage requires regarding the excellent universal value of Korean buddhist temples, and also were examined the matters to be noted in terms of type, standard, selection and application process of the registration as strategy of registration. The results of study showed that Korean buddhist temples have an outstanding universal value(OUV) in terms of integrity and authenticity and their systems of protection and management are relatively well implemented. As to the strategy and the value to register Korean buddhist temples in World Cultural Heritage, the registration standards of ⅰ, ⅲ, ⅳ and ⅵ would be favorable. It is thought that there would be many scenarios for the objects of registration. The application process is complicated and it seemed urgent to organize a Special Committee for Registration of Korean buddhist temples in World Cultural Heritage(provisional name) in the Jogye Order . Finally, it should be stressed that the registration of Korean temples in World Cultural Heritage requires much effort and sacrifice, which is indispensable. It is the most difficult, enter alia, to restore Korean buddhist temples to their original state in order to secure their integrity and authenticity, above all. To fail to overcome diverse constraints to put with in order to register Korean temples able to be registered due to their outstanding universal value or to evade such constraints shall make them far from the registration, which is a cause for concern.
