냉전과 종교 : 2차대전 후 에큐메니즘 확산과 미국교회, 동아시아 ‘자유 모럴’ 구축

이 연구는 냉전 형성기 세계교회 에큐메니즘 확산 과정에 미국교회 중심으로 적극 기획된 ‘자유 모럴’ 개념이 동아시아 탈식민·혁명과정 및 한반도 극우 냉전 형성에 미친영향을 종교 지정학적 관계로 접근하였다. 연구는 세 차원에서 냉전 형성기 ‘자유 모럴’ 의 지정학적 관계를 검토하였다. 첫째, 2차대전 종전기 미국 연방교회협의회(FCC) 중심으로 제기된 ‘새로운 세계질서(New World Order)’ 논의들을 ‘자유모럴’ 형성 관계로 살펴보았다. 자유세계 기둥인 기독교, 그리고 미국교회가 구상한 ‘정신적·도덕적 세계=자유’ 등식은 냉전기 미국의 정책결정자들이 세계를 선과 악, 자유와 독재, 민주주의 대 공산주의의 대립 블록을 승인하는데 시민적·종교적 당위를 제공했다. 둘째, 2차대전 후 아시아 전역에 걸친 탈식민화 과정, 독립과 혁명 과정은 구체제, 제국주의를 상징하는 기독교에 대한 저항 및 전통 종교로의 복귀, 아시아 민족주의, 급진적 사회개혁 등이 포함된다. 식민지·선교지 관리자로서 서구교회는 기존 선교관계(Parenting System) 재조정 과정 에 서구 ‘자유 모럴’에 기초한 ‘새로운 아시아 New Asia’ 구상을 제공함으로써 아시아 급진 혁명성에 대응했다. 구체적으로는 1949년 동아시아교회협의회(EACC) 창설에서 공산혁명 방어 목표가 제시된다. 셋째, 연구는 2차대전 이후 한국교회 안에 본격적으로 수용된 세계교회 에큐메니컬 신학이 분단과 전쟁을 경험한 한국교회 접촉면을 자유 굴절관계로 접근했다. 냉전기 자유세계 질서원리인 ‘자유’ 개념이 한반도 분단 지형에서는 극우정치이념으로 굴절 수렴되는 개신교 현상을 이해할 수 있다.
Abstract
This study approaches the influence of the concept of “free moral”led by the U.S. church on the East Asian decolonization and revolution and the formation of the far-right Cold War on the Korean Peninsula in the process of spreading ecumenism in the world church during the Cold War. The study examines the geopolitical effect of ‘free moral’ during the Cold War formation in three dimensions. First, the discussions on the “New World Order,” which were raised mainly by the Federal Council of Churches (FCC) at the end of World War II, are examined as a relationship of “free-moral,” Christianity, the pillar of the Free World, and the idea that “spiritual and moral world equals freedom” conceived by the American Church provided civil and religious legitimacy for U.S. policymakers to approve the world as a block of good and evil, freedom and dictatorship, and democracy versus communism during the Cold War. Second, post-World War II decolonization processes, independence and revolution processes across Asia include resistance to Christianity which symbolized old system and imperialism, a return to traditional religion, Asian nationalism, and radical social reform. As a colonial and missionary supervisor, the Western Church responded to Asia’s radical revolution by providing a “New Asia” initiative based on Western “freedom moral”in the process of readjusting the existing missionary system. Specifically, the goal of defending the communist revolution was presented in the establishment of the East Asian Christian Conference (EACC) in 1949. Third, The study approaches the point in which the ecumenical theology of the World Church meets Korean churches that experienced division and war as a freedom refraction relationship. It is possible to understand the Protestant phenomenon in which the concept of “freedom,” the principle of order in the free world during the Cold War, is refracted into the far-right political ideology in the divided terrain of the Korean Peninsula.
