한반도 분단체제하 종교폭력에 대한 비판적 고찰

본 연구는 종교폭력(religious violence)에 대한 연구들을 비판적으로 검토하고한반도 분단체제 생성기에 종교폭력으로서 나타난 전투적 반공주의를 평가한것이다. 국내에 구체적으로 소개된 적이 없는 대표적 종교폭력이론가들인 마크저겐스마이어와 스콧 애플비가 주장하는 폭력의 발생 원인이나 확증자로서 종교의 역할에 대한 주장들을 정리하며 비판적 성찰을 한다. 이들은 세계 도처에서 종교가 폭력을 조장하는 역할을 하고 있다고 주장한다. 또한 종교가 세속의이념이나 제도들과 달리 역사와 지역을 초월해 인간을 충동적으로 만들며 좀더 폭력을 촉진한다고 주장한다. 본 연구는 이러한 주장들을 거부하며 이를 위해 한국전쟁 전후 한국개신교가 행한 종교폭력으로서 전투적 반공주의를 검토할 것이다. 한국교회의 전투적 반공주의는 분단폭력에 무방비로 노출되고이에 대응하는 과정에서 이러한 종교폭력이 발생하였음을 강조할 것이다. 분단체제의 비극은 하나의 민족에서 두 신생국가가 탄생함으로써 시작된다. 국가의 폭력과 희생의 요청에 한국개신교는 생존을 위해 적극적으로참여하였다. 냉전체제의 구조적 압박과 무신론-공산주의와 종교자유-자본주의라는 이항대립적 세계관의 형성은 기독교와 반공주의가 선택적 친화성으로 결합하게 만들었고 전투적 반공주의가 발현되게 하였다. 미소냉전의이념 차이로 발생한 한국전쟁은 한반도를 선과 악의 종말론적 싸움으로채색시킨 우주적 전쟁터로 만들었다. 한국교회는 분단체제로부터 폭력으로의 요청을 강요받았고 생존과 이익을 위해 합리적으로 이 기회를 적극 활용하였다. 본 연구는 신의 뜻으로 행한 종교폭력은 세속적 폭력과의 다양한 관계에 대한 조사가 필요함을 강조한다. 종교는 폭력을 조장하지 않는다. 냉전과 분단체제에 의해 요청되고 허용되었던 특별한 시간과 공간 속에서 종교에 의한 시연적 폭력이 발생했던 것이다.
Abstract
This study provides a sociological study of militant anti-communism that propagated religious violence during the Korean War. The Cold war system brought out a division system on the Korean peninsula between 1940s and 50s. According to religious violence theory, religion has a peculiarly dangerous inclination to promote violence. After being exiled from communist North Korea, North Korean Christian defectors vigilantly served for South Korean military with militant, anti-communism during the Korean War. In particular, they were often involved with anti-communist terrors under the Korean government. Korean churches adopted this militant anti-communism from the defectors that came from up North. Furthermore, they became the leading group and the majority power of South Korean Church. By evaluating anti-communism as religious violence by the Korean Church, the Church did not promote violence. What I challenge is the argument that the Korean Church was more inclined toward violence than were both governments of the two new Korean states during war time. This study reveals that, rather, two Korean governments coercively required the killing and sacrifice of their people. It is evident that North Korea Christian defectors were raised as militant, anti-communist warriors against communist North Korea during Korean war. I would help us to see that they were the scapegoat of the division system on the Korean peninsula constructed by the Cold War.
