Abstract
The Hwaeomsa is a representative Hwaeom temple in the Honam region, established by Yeongi in the 8th century. However, during the Japanese invasions of Korea (Imjin War), the temple was completely destroyed due to the activities of Buddhist monk-soldiers centered at Hwaeomsa, and its related records were also lost. As a result, it is fairly difficult to identify the true historical figure of Yeongi, the temple's founder. In particular, the Chronicle of Hwaeomsa(華嚴寺事蹟) compiled in 1630 by Haean was intermixed with the Chronicle of Bulguksa(佛國寺事蹟), leading us to confusion. Consequently, the studies on Yeongi and the origin of Hwaeomsa have only been limited up to now. This study seeks to clarify the confusion surrounding the name “Yeongi” and argues that his ideological background was related to the Hwaeom tradition of the Jajang lineage, which had been transmitted to Hwangnyongsa in the 8th century. This stands in contrast to the idea that the Hwaeom tradition of Uisang and his disciples was not connected to Hwangnyongsa but deeply involved in the founding of Bulguksa. In summary, the Hwaeom Buddhism prevalent in the capital city of Gyeongju in the 8th century appears to have been divided as follows: NO Hwaeom Buddhism of the Jajang Lineage Hwaeom Buddhism of the Uisang Lineage 1 Founder Jajang Uisang 2 social status Jingol noble class Regardless of class, from Jingol to slaves 3 Central temple Hwangnyongsa Temple Buseoksa and Bulguksa Temples 4 Central text 80-books of Avataṃsaka sūtra 60-books of Avataṃsaka sūtra And, it is also clear that, like Bulguksa, Hwaeomsa was a representative temple in the former Baekje territory founded to foster the spiritual unification and harmony of the peoples of the Three Kingdoms after the unification.
