Abstract

North Korea is a ‘Modern Theatre State’ that, under a modern state system, uses powerful state authority to forge new traditions and symbols, projects state aspirations onto its people through state rituals and a totalitarian propaganda system, and ultimately realizes the state's goals. This study traces the origins of this theatre state through the formation of key components such as tradition and symbolism, stage, actors, narrative, and direction. From the late 1950s through the 1960s, North Korea used modern state power to create new revolutionary traditions and symbols. It constructed a stage that revealed a concentric power order centered on Kim Il-sung, where the leader and the people assumed the roles of father and children respectively, thereby transforming the state order into a familial narrative. By establishing supporting state organizations and propaganda systems, North Korea emerged as a modern theatre state in the early 1970s, a status it maintains to this day.
