(Henri Christophe: A Chronicle in Seven Scenes, 1950)』, 『북과 색

Abstract

This study analyzes Derek Walcott’s (1930-2017) historical drama about the Haitian Revolution, the Haitian Trilogy, as a politics of memory related to Caribbean decolonization. It compares Walcott's work to plays about the Haitian Revolution by other contemporary black Caribbean intellectuals. The Haitian Trilogy consists of Henri Christophe: A Chronicle in Seven Scenes (1950), Drums and Colours: An Epic Drama (1958), and The Haitian Earth (1984). Walcott's repeated representations of the Haitian Revolution over a period of approximately 35 years, from 1949 to 1984, can be seen as a politics of memory that seeks true decolonization of the Caribbean and the formation of a new national identity. This study focuses on the historical changes depicted in Walcott’s plays and analyzes them from a diachronic and dynamic perspective. Walcott's works were created in different historical contexts and problem-spaces. His first two plays, Henri Christophe (1949) and Drums and Colours (1958), emerged from the anti-colonial problem-space of active national and international decolonization movements. In contrast, The Haitian Earth (1984) is related to the postcolonial transformation of the problem-space that resulted from the crisis commonly experienced by Caribbean countries after independence in the 1960s. This shift from anti-colonialism to post-colonialism implied a fundamental change in the perception of (colonial) modernity and subjectivity. Through a comparison with the works of other Caribbean black radical intellectuals on the Haitian Revolution, this study sheds historical light on the meaning and content of this post-colonial turn in Walcott’s work.
