신입생 세미나 운영 현황과 교과 개발에 대한 연구－ S대 교과 개발 과정을 중심으로

입학생들의 학업 중단 비율을 낮추기 위한 목적으로 미국 대학은 1800년대부터 신입생 세미나 교육을 도입하기 시작했다. 이후 꾸준한 증가 추세를 보여 온 신입생 세미나는 현재 미국의 경우 약 90% 이상의 대학에서 시행하고 있으며, 국내 대학들도 2000년대 이후 도입하기 시작한 이래 지금까지 증가 추세를 유지하고 있다. 이러한 현상은 학령인구의 감소, 대학 교육의 대중화로 인해 그 동안 고등교육에 진학할 수 없던 학생들의 고등교육 접근성 증가, 그리고 1학년과 2학년 사이 시기에 나타나는 높은 탈락률 등이 중요한 원인으로 작용하기 때문으로 이해된다. 본 연구는 대학교육에서 신입생 대상 교육의 비중이 점차적으로 증대하고 있는 현상 앞에서 특히 신입생 세미나 유형의 교과목이 어떤 양상을 보여주는지를 조사함으로써 현황을 분석함에 일차적인 목적을 둔다. 아울러 S대학이 2014학년도부터 개발 시행하고 있는 신입생 세미나 교과 유형을 소개함으로써 그 장·단점을 분석하고, 이를 바탕으로 개선 방안을 논의함에 이차적 목적을 두고자 한다. 이는 대부분의 대학들이 1학년 과정에서 대학생활에 대한 안내, 학과 전공에 대한 이해 및 진로탐색, 소속 대학에 대한 이해와 자긍심 고취 등을 통해 대학 생활에 연착륙할 수 있도록 설계된 교과 프로그램의 적절성과 그 성과를 점검함으로써 신입생 세미나 교과목의 활용도와 취지를 높일 수 있는 토대를 제공함에 나름의 의미를 더하기 위함이다.
Abstract
American Universities has introduced Freshmen Seminar for reducing drop-out rate of university since 1800’s. After that, the trend of Freshmen Seminar has increased and been practiced in more than 90% of universities of United States. Because Korean universities recently confront very serious circumstances-reducing school age population, lack of scholastic ability, and high drop-out rate in freshmen and junior, Korean universities has also introduced and keep practicing this program. Therefore, this study firstly aims to analyze operational status through investigate how Freshmen Seminar shows substantial effect with increasing demand of the freshmen education in university. Furthermore, this study secondly aims to introduce and analyze S university's Freshmen Seminar program from 2014, and to suggest improvements of program. This study wishes to set a baseline for using Freshmen Seminar program through checking the validity and the achievements of program that can help student's Adaptation for college life introducing program for university's life, future plan, and understanding and pride of their own school.
