Abstract

This paper examines the discourse surrounding the pursuit of artistic vision and popular appeal in postwar Korean cinema through an empirical analysis of the film Money (Don) and related archival sources. It revisits scholarly discussions of 1950s “Korean Realism” and gives them concrete form through the “rural film” Money, while exploring how the film’s artistic features and popular narrative strategies are embedded within historical context. The study first investigates the film’s production background and reception, and then analyzes its aesthetic style―particularly the interplay between direction and performance—as well as its strategies for engaging with audiences of the time. While director Kim So-dong and his production team were clearly influenced by Italian Neorealism, this influence is reflected primarily in the film’s thematic orientation and ideological stance. The paper argues that the filmmakers sought to integrate performative elements with cinematic aesthetics in a simultaneous pursuit of both artistic expression and mass appeal.
