Abstract
This study concerns a short, science fiction writing activity tailored to the Design Thinking process, as a part of the case study about a science fiction related course. In “Imaginary Journey to Science Fiction (SF)”, a science fiction related course at Keimyung University, students write a science fiction short story on their own in order to understand the characteristics of science fiction and narrative writing in general. This activity is organized in connection with the Design Thinking processes by emphasizing stories involving robots, along with brainstorming, drawing their robots, sharing feedback, etc. Science fiction creates an alternative world where even the strange and unknown become possible through the addition of scientific logic. In other words, the imaginative aspect of science fiction makes it possible for writers to create an unrealistic world that still follows the ironclad rules of realistic logic. This writing activity helps students to learn this unique characteristic of science fiction firsthand. In particular, this activity proceeded according to the 5 Design Thinking processes, using the I, Robot narrative implemented by the prolific and legendary science fiction writer Isaac Asimov. By comparing two surveys, one of which we gave at the beginning of the semester, and the other one at the end of the semester, we were able to see that this activity worked well to achieve our goals of helping students to better understand not only certain characteristics peculiar to science fiction writing, but also its narrative drive. However, more feedback and further study regarding this activity using different survey methods are also still required.
