“생활예술 오케스트라”를 통해 보는 예술의 사회적 가치

예술의 사회적 가치는 시대에 따라 변화한다. 예술에 대한 관점은 예술은 소수의 예술가에 의해서만 만들어질 수 있는 작품이라는 ‘예술지상주의적 관점’에서 모든 사람이 예술 활동을 할 수 있다는 ‘생활예술적 관점’으로 점차 전환되어 왔다. 따라서 예술의 가치 또한 수월성 또는 사적 효과라는 전통적인 관점을 넘어서 지역성, 시민성, 새로운 예술성의 성격으로 변모하였다. 본 연구는 전통적으로 구분되는 전문예술의 관점을 넘어서 공동체성을 기반으로 운영되는 국내 생활예술 오케스트라의 사례를 통해 예술의 사회적 가치 재구성을 시도하였다. 총 6팀, 12명의 생활예술 오케스트라 참여자를 대상으로 인터뷰를 진행한 결과, 이들은 음악적 기량을 최우선으로 추구하는 비생활예술 오케스트라와 달리 정서적 관계성의 의미를 내포한 단체 내 화합, 커뮤니티의 기반으로서의 기능, 자기충족적 예술성의 실현 등의 가치를 추구하고 있음을 발견할 수 있었다. 이는 예술이 지니는 사회적 기능과도 맞닿는다. 생활예술의 관점에서 예술의 사회적 가치가 재구성되는 구체적인 양상을 분석한 본 연구가 향후 변화하는 예술생태계를 이해하는 데 있어 주요한 논의의 토대가 되기를 기대한다.
Abstract
This research attempts to investigate how the social value of arts has been reconstructed in community arts, through mainly researching the community orchestras in South Korea. Beyond excellency or personal benefits which are usually considered as traditional value of professional arts, the key value of community based arts activities would be explained through three distinct concepts; citizenship, locality and artistic value. With in-depth interviews of twelve members from six different community orchestras, the researchers discovered the harmony based on interpersonal relationships in each organization is one of the critical values regarding to operating the group. Moreover, it is found out that community solidarity with the local audiences as well as between the members makes each organization a cohesive group. In addition, the self-fulfilling artistic value is strongly connected to the motivation and satisfaction of their activities. In terms of the social value of arts, these findings are expected to be more developed in further researches of community based arts activities.
