한국과 미국의 문화예술교육 관련 양적연구 경향에 대한 비교

본 연구는 최근 들어 많은 관심을 받고 있는 ‘문화예술교육’과 관련된 주제를 연구하는데 있어 다양한 사회과학의 양적방법들이 얼마나 적용되고 있으며, 우리나라와 미국에서 양적방법을 활용하는 경향에는 어떤 차이가 있는지 비교해보려는 목적을 가지고 있다. 분석을 위해 한국과 미국에서 간행된 문화예술교육 관련 학술논문들, 그리고 대규모 양적 데이터를 제공하는 웹페이지의 환경을 비교하였다. 결과는 다음 세 가지로 요약될 수 있다. 첫째, 미국의 문화예술교육 관련 학술논문들은 예상보다, 또는 한국에 비해, 양적방법의 활용 비중이 높지 않았다. 둘째, 문화예술교육 관련 대규모 데이터를 제공하고 관리하는 온라인 연구기반은 미국이 상대적으로 더 잘 갖추고 있었다. 셋째, 정부에서 투자해서 만든 서베이 데이터, 또는 공공 데이터를 활용해서 학술논문을 작성하는 경향은 미국 측이 월등히 높았다.
Abstract
This study aims to compare the extent to which social scientific quantitative methods are adopted in studies of culture & arts education in South Korea and the United States. It also investigates noticeable trends in arts education studies that employed quantitative reasoning in those two countries. In so doing, it compares online websites that provide individual researchers with arts education datasets as well as academic journal articles published in each country. The findings from the analysis can be summarized as follows. First, the proportion of American research papers in this area, which adopt quantitative method(s), is not as high as the expected (or not higher than the Korean). Second, The US has excellent online infrastructures that create and manage large scale datasets for arts education research. Finally, in this area of topics, the US has higher probabilities that perform studies and publish papers, exclusively relying on survey or public data built by government or other administrative offices.
