본고에서는 미국 대학에서 한국어를 강의한 경험을 토대로 한국어 교육 현황과 문제점을 살펴본 후, 그것을 분석하고 개선책을 모색하였다. 이를 위해 먼저 미국에서의 한국어 교육의 전반적인 상황에 대하여 살펴본 후 미국 대학에서의 한국어 교육, 그 중에서도 노스 캐롤라이나 대학 채플힐 본교(University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill) 이하 UNC라 칭하기로 한다. 에서의 한국어 교육의 현황을 살펴보았다. 미국에서의 한국어 교육 과정은 크게 교포 어린이들을 위한 주말 한글학교 과정, 공립학교 내에서의 이중 언어 교육, 대학에서 외국어로서의 한국어 교육, 직업적 언어 훈련으로서의 한국어 교육의 네 가지로 나눌 수 있다. 그 중에서도 대학에서의 한국어 교육은 비교적 체계가 잡혀있는 편에 속하지만 여러 가지 당면 과제들을 안고 있는 것 또한 사실이다. 국제 사회에서 한국의 위상이 높아짐에 따라 한국학과 한국어 교육에 대한 관심이 또한 고조되고 있다. 그리고 한국어 교육의 성패는 다른 외국어 교육의 경우와 마찬가지로, 더 많은 학생들이 더 큰 의욕과 동기를 가지고 한국어 교육을 받게 하는 데 달려 있다고 할 수 있을 것이다. 그러므로 앞에서 다루었던 문제점들을 적극적으로 개선하고, 보다 체계적인 한국어 교육 과정을 개발하여 한국어 교육이 해외에서도 더욱 발전할 수 있도록 해야 할 것이다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to analyze the current issues, situations and problems based on the experience of teaching Korean language at the university level in the United States. This analysis will help search for some improvements in Korean Language Programs. There are a few factors indicating that Korean language education in the US has become a necessity. These include the surge of the Korean population in the Unites States, the rapid increase of Korean national power, the South Korean government's Korean language programs, culture, globalization policy, and the strategic importance of Korea militarily. Starting about a decade ago, interest in the Korean language, and Korean education has been rising rapidly in the US. The way Korean language courses are being taught in the US can be divided into four main categories: weekend Korean language schools for Korean children, bilingual education in public schools, Korean language education in college, and Korean language education as vocational language training. Among these, the Korean language education in college is the only one which is comparatively systematic. However, the integration of heritage and non-heritage students, textbooks being focused on language learning only, the lack of standardized Korean teachers education, an imbalance in teaching methods related to grammar education, and the lack of diversity in the field are just a few of the major obstacles. With these factors in mind, the overall situation of Korean language education in the United States was examined, and then studied in more detail using the Korean Language program at a university in the Unites States. In addition, Korean language educators in the United States, the Korean government, Korean studies educators and scholars in Korea should be actively involved to solve problems. In this way, a Korean language curriculum that meets global standards can be developed and settled.
