Abstract

A distinct field called “cultural sociology” that differentiated itself from existing “sociology of culture” began to emerge and develop within the world of American sociology at the turn of the 1990s. At the center of this movement was Jeffrey C. Alexander and his school. The primary purpose of this article is to introduce the Strong Program in sociology as advanced by Alexander and to discuss some of its exemplary empirical studies. Critical to the Strong Program is theoretical securement of analytic autonomy of culture in which culture is not reduced to social structure and, at the same time, a detailed methodological description of how culture concretely works as an independent variable in a specific research setting. This article introduces seven exemplary papers on the Strong Program. The biggest advantage of Alexander’s cultural sociology is the picture of culture acting as a compass for guiding social action in moments of crises. It is difficult, however, to say that culture modeling on world-religion guides social action in routine, everyday life. Thus, there is also a need for cultural sociology to focus on other types of system of symbols such as magic and science that guide everyday life. Moreover, the perspective of radical Durkemians should be incorporated in order to study the postmodern setting in which the différantial relationship between the sacred and the profane prevails.
