문화사회학과 실천의 문제: 실천적 전환을 중심으로

초록

이 논문은 문화사회학을 비롯하여 문화인류학, 문화연구 등 문화를 탐구하는 분과들이 실천(practice)의 차원을 강조한다는 점에 착목하여 실천 개념과 관계되는 문화사회학의 이론적․방법론적 문제들을 검토한다. 이를 위해서 이른바 실천적 전환을 중심적인 논의의 대상으로 삼는다. 우선 실천적 전환이 어떤 점에서 전환일 수 있는지 실천이론의 새로움을 두 가지 차원에서 살펴본다. 첫째로 실천이론은 실체론에서 구성주의로의 전환을 가능하게 했다. 논문에서는 이를 존재론적 전환이라 명명한다. 둘째로 실천이론은 변화가 아니라 질서를 설명하려는 시도에 기여했다. 논문에서는 이를 문제설정의 전환이라 부른다. 하지만 실천적 전환이 갖는 의의를 섬세하게 재고할 필요성 또한 있다. 맑스, 뒤르켐, 베버 등의 고전사회학이 이미 실천에 대한 이론이었음을 고려한다면 부르디외와 푸코 등 실천이론의 등장은 ‘전환’이라기보다는 고전사회학으로의 ‘복귀’에 가까울 수 있기 때문이다. 그럼에도 불구하고 실천이론의 등장이 새로운 주목을 받았던 것은 파슨스를 통하여 유럽의 고전사회학이 선별적으로 수용되고 프래그머티즘의 전통이 영향을 발휘했던 미국적 맥락이 있었기에 가능했던 일이다. 한편 실천의 차원에 주목하는 실천이론의 등장은 이론 내적으로는 혁신을 가져왔지만 이론 자체의 위상 하락이라는 역설을 맞기도 했다. 이론의 위기는 비판의 위기와 깊은 관계가 있는 바, 문화사회학이 구체적인 실천들에 주목하면서도 비판의 계기를 유지할 수 있는 길을 모색할 필요가 있다.

Abstract

This essay investigates the theoretical and methodological problems of cultural sociology which are involved in the concept of practice. For this purpose I focuses on the practical turn in social theory. The practical turn could be regarded as a ‘turn’ in two dimension. First, the turn to practice enabled the ontological turn from substantialism to constructionism. Secondly, it contributed to attempts to explain social orders rather than social changes, which is referred to as problem- setting shift. Despite the significance of practical turn in cultural sociology, it is necessary to reconsider the meaning of ‘turn’. The emergence of practice theory might be called ‘return’ to classical sociology rather than a ‘turn’ to practice. Because classical sociologies of Marx, Durkheim, and Weber had been already theories of practice before the works of Bourdieu and Foucault attracted attention. Though the approach of practice theory was not fresh indeed, it could be spotlighted on the conditions that ⑴ european classical sociology had been introduced to America by Parsons’ distorted view and that ⑵ the pragmatist tradition exerted considerable influence in American intellectual context. If practical turn was a great innovation of theory in general, ironically, it prompted the end of the Theory simultaneously. As the crisis of theory is deeply related to the crisis of critique, this essay seeks to find a way to maintain the critical orientation of cultural sociology while holding the legacy of practice theory still.
