상황주의자 인터내셔널의 ‘상황’ 개념의 이론적 배경에 관한 연구

On the Concept of “Situation” of the Situationnist International and its Theoretical Background

초록

상황주의자 인터내셔널이 20세기 지성사에 남긴 흔적은 분명하다. 소수의 인원이 참여했고 활동 기간도 짧았다는 이유로 이 그룹은 다른 아방가르드 예술 운동이나 사회 운동에 비해 그 중요성을 제대로 인정받지 못했다. 하지만 이 그룹이 제기했던 지적, 예술적, 사회적 논쟁들은 여전히 시의성을 가지고 있다. 한국에서도 IS를 소개하거나 이들이 제기했던 논쟁점들을 한국 사회에 적용하는 여러 연구들이 발표되었다. 그러나 주로 예술 영역에서 제한적으로 다뤄지고 있는 실정이며, 여전히 IS가 사용했던 ‘상황’ 개념에 대해서 충분히 분석하지 못한 상태이다. 따라서 이 연구에서는 IS가 상황 개념을 어떤 이론적 자원을 바탕으로 만들었고, 어떤 의미에서 이것을 사용했는지 자세히 살펴보고자 한다. 이 연구에서는 특히 IS에 영향을 준 중요한 지적 배경으로 사르트르와 실존주의, 르페브르의 순간의 이론, 앙드레 브르통의 연통관 모델, 하위징아의 놀이 개념 등에 주목할 것이다. 드보르와 IS는 이들 개념과 이론을 자기 식으로 ‘전용’하면서 새로운 개념을 만들어냈고, 이를 바탕으로 소외된 일상과 스펙타클의 사회를 비판하고 예술과 혁명이 결합되는 사회의 가능성을 모색했다.

Abstract

The mark left by the Situationnist International on the intellectual history of the 20th century is clear. Compared to other avant-garde movements or social movements, the importance of the Situationnist International has not been properly recognized because of its small number of participants and short duration of activity. However, the intellectual, artistic, and social debates raised by this group remain timely. There have been Korean studies that introduced the Situationnist International group or applied the points of debate raised by them to Korean society. However, such studies have taken place in a limited capacity within the realm of art - there still has been insufficient treatment of the concept of ‘situation’ as used by the Situationnist International. The purpose of this study is to examine the theoretical/ practical resources with which the Situationnist International formulated the concept of ‘situation’, and the significance by which they used this concept. This study will look at key intellectual backgrounds to have influenced Situationnist International, including Sartre’s existentialism, Lefebvre’s theory of moments, André Breton’s model of communicating vessels, and Huizinga’s theory of play. Debord and the Situationnist International appropriated these concepts in their own way to create new concepts, thus critiquing the society of alienated everyday lives and spectacle, while exploring the possibilities of a society where art and revolution come together.
