Abstract
This study critically examines the individualized parenting of millennial parents (born in the 1980s) residing in middle-to-upper-class areas of the Seoul metropolitan area, with the aim of exploring how these parenting influence children's socialization. To this end, in-depth interviews were conducted with 13 millennial parents and 4 education professionals living in new towns like Gangnam, Bundang, and Dongtan. The study is significant for its use of an integrated theoretical framework, combining Lahire's theory of socialization and Furedi’s socio-emotional approach, to elucidate the multilayered nature of parenting in contemporary Korean society. The research findings revealed a “contradictory pattern” in which participants pursued individualistic values emphasizing their children’s self-directed choice and individuality, while simultaneously strengthening family intimacy and expanding their involvement in their children’s lives. This parenting style manifested as a new socialization pattern: the “strengthening of family-centricity in interaction”. This trend became particularly pronounced after the COVID-19 pandemic, as social distancing limited children’s external interactions, leading to their social relationships and daily experiences being reorganized around the family, especially parents. Viewing this through Lahire’s lens of “multiple socializations filtered by the family”, it can be seen that the family’s status as a “filter” mediating and controlling various sources of a child’s socialization has been reinforced by the complex interplay of factors such as the rapid spread of digital technology, the pandemic, and intensifying class reproduction competition among the Korean middle-to-upper class. Furthermore, from Furedi’s socio-emotional perspective, the family- centricity in interaction observed in this study suggests the potential for negative socialization, which could lead to the formation of a “vulnerable self” characterized by decreased self-expression, empathy, and difficulties in forming peer relationships.
