이 논문에서는 청소년의 요구가 다양해지고 있는 오늘날의 소비사회에서 가족의 자녀 사회화는 어떠한 내용으로 진행되고 있는지를 구체적으로 살펴보기 위해 자녀에 대한 부모의 기대와 평가, 부모-자녀관계, 부모의 개입에 대해 질문해보았다. 특히 심층면접법을 활용해서 가족에서 행해지는 사회화에 대해 생생하게 연구하고자 시도하였다. 심층면접은 총 36명의 학부모를 대상으로 2007년 7월부터 11월까지 실시되었다. 조사 결과, 변화하고 있는 청소년의 취향이나 소비패턴은 가족사회화에 커다란 영향을 미치지 못하고 있다. 부모는 자녀의 바람이나 요구에 상관없이 학업성취에 대한 기대가 크며 공부나 성적을 기준으로 자녀를 평가하는 경향을 보이고 있다. 따라서 자녀가 학업 외에 다른 것에 관심이 많을 경우에는 부모가 개입해서 제재를 가하고 학업에 몰두하도록 압력을 가하고 있다. 한편, 부모의 자녀 교육에 대한 정보 얻기 노력이나 연결망 활용은 초등학생 때에 가장 활발하게 진행되고 있다. 한국 부모들의 자녀 사회화 내용은 다원주의적 가치에 기초하기보다는 공부 중심의 경쟁적 사회분위기를 수용하므로 대체로 유사한 성향을 보이고 있으며, 자녀의 부모에 대한 의존적 태도를 당연시 하고 있다.
Abstract
This paper examined parental expectations and evaluations in regard to their children, parent-child relationships, and levels of parental involvement in terms of both study and socialization within Korean families in today’s consumption-oriented society. I In-depth interviews were utilized to understand the detailed processes involved. The interviews were conducted with 36 parents between July and November, 2007. The research findings suggest that the shifting tastes or consumption patterns of adolescents have not influenced the family socialization process to any great extent. Parents have high expectations for their children in terms of their academic achievement and tend to evaluate their children according to their study habits and school records. Since children are interested in a great many other things than studying, the differences in both desires and interests cause conflicts between parents and children. While parents’ expectations regarding academic performance increases in line with a child’s progression through higher levels of schooling, parents’ utilization of informal networks to acquire information on the next stage of education are greater among parents of children in primary schools than those in secondary schools. This study concludes that parents’ high expectations of their children and excessive involvement along with a competitive social environment aggravate parent-children relationships. Korean parents tend to exhibit homogeneous tendencies by taking on elements of the competitive nature of society than exhibiting more pluralistic values when it comes to educating their children.
