이 글은 1920년대 후반 평양 문예 동인지 『백치』에 대해 소개하고 그 문학사적 의의에 대해 고찰하고자 한다. 먼저, 동인지의 체제 및 구성 방식을 살피고, 구체적인 작품 수록 양상과 특징에 대해 분석한다. 『백치』는 1928년 1월 1일 평양에서 창간되었다. 평안도 문인 10명이 필자로 참여하였고, 발행과 편집은 홍종인이 담당하였다. 편집, 출판, 인쇄, 보급 모두 평양에서 이루어졌다. 소설 4편, 평론 2편, 시 4편 외, 가십 1편, 수필 4편 등 크게 15편의 작품을 실었다. 『백치』는 ‘미’와 ‘예술’를 중시하며 문학의 자율성을 추구한다. 또 개성, 개인, 자아 각성, 참된 사람, 참된 인생 등에 주목한다. 개인의 감정과 미적 자율성을 중점을 두면서도 계급 인식, 민족의식 등에 대해서도 관심을 가졌다. 『백치』에는 1920년대 평양을 중심으로 활동한 문인들의 현실 인식과 미학적 수준, 예술적 지향점 등이 담겨 있다. 또, 개성의 발현과 이상적 민족 공동체를 건설하고자 했던 평양의 지역적 특수성도 나타나 있다. 다음으로 『백치』의 문학사적 의의에 대해 살핀다. 1920년대 동인지 문학의 지평을 확대하였다는 점, 지역 문화 연구의 토대를 마련하였다는 점에서 문학사적 가치가 있다. 나아가 서북 지역 동인지의 계보를 형성하였다는 점, 중앙 문단에 소개되지 않은 작품과 작가의 행적에 대한 정보를 제공한다는 점에서 문학사적 의의가 크다고 본다.
Abstract
This article introduces the literary magazine Baekchi, published in the Pyongyang area in the late 1920s, and examines its significance in literary history. First, we examine the overall bibliographical nature, system, and composition. Next, we analyze the specific aspects and characteristics of the works included. Baekchi was founded in Pyongyang on January 1, 1928. Ten writers from Pyeongan Province participated as writers, and Hong Jong-in was in charge of publishing and editing. It is organized in the following order: novels, reviews, poetry, gossip, literary essays, and editorial notes. It contains 15 works including 4 novels, 2 essays, 4 poems, 1 gossip, and 4 essays. beauty and art and pursues the autonomy and romanticism of literature. Baekchi focuses on individual emotions and aesthetic autonomy, but also takes interest in class awareness and national consciousness. It not only emphasized artistry, but also responded sensitively to the circumstances of the time. Baekchi contains the perception of reality, aesthetic level, and artistic orientation of writers active in Pyongyang in the 1920s. In addition, the regional characteristics of Pyongyang, which sought to express individuality and build an ideal national community, are also revealed. Next, we examined the literary historical significance of Baekchi. The fact that it expanded the horizon of literary fiction in the 1920s. It has literary historical value in that it laid the foundation for regional cultural studies. Furthermore, it formed the genealogy of the Dong-inji in the northwest region. It is considered to have great literary historical significance in that it provides information on works and authors' activities that are not introduced in the central paragraph.
