Abstract

This paper investigated and presented a list of ancient documents that recorded bees and beekeeping, and then briefly examined the origin and history of beekeeping in Korea through them, and examined related literary works from an ecological perspective. There are a total of 36 ancient documents and literary works related to bees and beekeeping, mainly official history books, literary works, agricultural books, and similar books. Beekeeping in Korea has been confirmed in literature since the late Three Kingdoms period, over 1,300 years ago. During the Goryeo period, private citizens collected honey through beekeeping, presented it to the government, and used it in various ways. By the mid-Joseon period, honey was already being produced in all eight provinces of Joseon, and in particular, many counties in five provinces, including Gyeongsang-do, Gangwon-do, Jeolla-do, Chungcheong-do, and Pyeongan-do, produced honey. In the late Joseon period, not only were agricultural books and historical records introducing various beekeeping techniques compiled, but their contents were also described in detail. In addition, we can confirm that in the 18th century, people who specialized in beekeeping, like today's professional beekeepers, appeared. Through articles in the Goryeosa Cheolyo and Lee Gyu-bo's “In Praise of the Bee [蜜蜂贊],” he denounced the destruction of the bee ecosystem, a situation in which bees were unable to survive on their own due to infinite human greed and were eventually driven to death en masse. In his work “A Story Mourning the Death of Bees [悼蜂說],” Haejwa Jeong Beom-jo deeply regretted his actions and mourned the death of the bees he had raised from starvation due to human greed. Hwang Taek-hu's “A Story of Animal Bees” strongly criticized the enormous destruction inflicted on bees, while acknowledging the reality that humans cannot give up all the benefits they gain from bees. So, after pondering the symbiosis between humans and bees, he emphasized that humans should reduce their infinite greed to leave enough honey for bees to survive. Modern capitalism is an economic system that operates around profit maximization. Due to the infinite greed of humans, the natural ecosystem of the Earth is on the verge of collapse, seriously threatening the survival of humanity. Now, humans must boldly reduce their infinite greed to actively protect the ecosystem, drastically reduce pollutant emissions, and boldly introduce a development method that is in harmony with nature. This is the wisdom of the symbiosis between humans and nature that our ancestors warn us about through the story of bees.
