민족주의와 문화개신교의 관계 연구 - 1차 세계대전을 전후한 하르낙의 정치적 입장 및 그 신학적 토대를 중심으로

문화개신교는 일반적으로 그다지 환영 받는 신학적 주제는 아니다. 일반적인 평가에 의하면, 문화개신교는 신과 세계, 종교와 문화의독특한 차이를 인식하지 못했던 잘못된 신학적 사조에 불과하다. 또한문화개신교는 이러한 신학적 문제로 인해 필연적으로 1차 세계대전을 정당화하는 전쟁 신학 혹은 민족주의 이데올로기로 전락할 수밖에없었다는 것이 문화개신교에 대한 대체적인 평가이다. 이러한 일반적인 평가에 반하여, 본 논문은 문화개신교가 신과 세계, 종교와 문화의 차이를 얼마나 깊이 인식하고 있었는지를 드러낸다. 또한 1차 세계대전과 바이마르공화국 시기 독일 사회 전반을 지배하고 있던 ―민족주의 개신교를 포함하는― 민족주의적 성향을 극복하고자 문화개신교가 시도했다는 것을 보이고자 한다. 이를 위해 본고는 당시 독일의 대내적, 대외적 정책과 관련하여 하르낙의 정치적 입장이 무엇이었는지를 보이고, 또한 그 신학적 토대가 어떤 것이었는지를 제시함으로서, 하나의 역사적 실체로서의 문화개신교에 대한 올바른 이해를 도모하고자 한다.
Abstract
Culture Protestantism doesn't enjoy a good theological reputation. According to usual assessment, it was nothing but a wrongly oriented theological trend which disregarded the difference between God and world, religion and culture. It was, they say, therefore necessary for Culture Protestantism to be a war theology or a nationalist ideology. Against the usual assessment, this article aims to show how deeply Culture Protestantism was aware of the difference between God and world, religion and culture. And that Culture Protestantism tried to overcome the nationalist tendency -including nationalist protestantism- which dominated the whole German society during the times of 1. World War and Weimar Republic, will be manifested. By concentrating on Adolf von Harnack's understanding about domestic and international policy of Germany, and by showing theological foundation of such political understanding, this article aims to present the authentic feature of Culture Protestantism as a historical reality.
