Abstract
The aim of this paper is to seek for one of the traces of East Asian thought in Western way of thinking. For that purpose, it attempts to find in Western thinkers, especially in Heidegger, the non-n o t i o n a l concept of human being between heaven and earth, which has been one of the roots of East Asian thoughts. It requires our re-reading of Heidegger by the East Asian perspective of betweenness. By rereading his text, it seeks to grope for the traces of betweenness in the unfolding of his thought. Heidegger’s text in Being and Time surely contains the motive of betweenness which appears as the voice of conscience, as calling, as a calling from Being. For Heidegger, truth lies in an event in which Being refuses beings. Being projects itself onto t/here(D a), yet it refuses Dasein. By doing so, it gives birth to another. This is history, which is the en-owm-ment(Er-eignis) of Being. It surely is repetition, but it never is without difference each time. In order to actualize itself, Being projects itself onto t/here, and the actualized t/here is not the same as it-self any more. So, it refuses to accept it. Its seeking for itself starts it over by calling us in the voice of conscience within us. This sense of betweenness is the trace of betweenness which East Asian thought has regarded as human being (between). This is the point the paper wants to make. Not being, but between. Western philosophy has addicted to the one and self-same, having victimized the sense of between. On the contrary, East Asian thought always contains the sense that human being lives between heaven and earth, reminding us that we are children of heaven and earth. The between of heaven and earth gives birth to human being.
