Abstract
This essay deals with the concept of creativity, which is regarded as Divine, in Stuart A. Kauffman’s interpretation of emergent attribute in the micro-world. As preceeding interpretations of creativity, there are three similar contemporary endeavors for interpretations of the creativity with S. A. Kauffman’s understanding of creativity; Alfred N. Whitehead, Robert C. Neville, and Gordon Kaufman. Unlike these scholars, S. A. Kauffman claims that the creativity is wonderful, reverence, and Divine. Actually his claim has an affinity with Gordon Kaufman’s creativity as Divine. The distinctive approach of Kauffman’s academic endeavor is to discard Newtonian reductionism in physics, and he prefers to emergent theory and creativity, which enable him to interpret the origin of life, value, and meaning in the world. The reductionism itself can not explain those dimension of life, value, and meaning. Creativity, as the source of the life, value, and meaning, Kauffman claims, pertains to the sacred with Divine, as an answer to those who have atheistic thoughts. However, this essay did critique Kauffman’s proposal, that his interpretation of creativity is an overstatement as to be extended to a dimension of sacred and faith activity. In general activity in religion and faith refers to the exercises of transformative spiritual dimension in relation to normative principle. For him, the creativity works in morality through evolution and provides a criteria of adequacy for mind control in self-organization in each occasion. But as the creativity which is pervasive all over the world, and there is no particular morality such as shown in pantheistic understanding of the world. Indeed, it is obvious that he did a contribution to religious faith in the mist of atheistic voices from socio-biological fields. But this essay indicates that his attempt to interpret the emergent creativity as a sacred is somewhat an overinterpretation.
