이 연구는 아우구스티누스의 수학 신학을 조명하기 위한 학제적 작업이다. 여기에서 아우구스티누스의 수학은 신학의 영역에 포함되는 것을 뜻한다. 이를 위하여 먼저 아우구스티누스의 수학적 배경을살 펴본다. 그 다음으로 성서 해석학과 관련하여 아우구스티누스의 수의 의미 해석을 분석한다. 마지막으로 아우구스티누스 수학 신학의 함의를 논의한다. 이를 위하여 『고백록』(Confessiones), 『삼위일체론』(De Trinitate), 『신국론』(De civitate Dei), 『창세기의 저자가 의도한 의미』(De Genesi ad litteram), 『자유의지론』(De libero arbitrio), 『참된종교』(De vera religione), 『그리스도교 교양』(De doctrina christiana)등의 논저들이 분석된다. 연구의 결과는 아우구스티누스에 의해서 무한으로서의 하나님 이해, 수학적 창조, 잠재된 비밀의 수로서의 씨앗의 수에 대한 이론이 새롭게 성립되었음을 보여준다. 아우구스티누스는 당시 피타고라스-플라톤 전통의 사유 모델을 능가하는 수학 신학의 네트워크를 구축하여 기독교의 사유체계를 위해서 필요하고 적절한 모델을 제공했다.
Abstract
The interdisciplinary study addresses Augustinus’ own mathematical theology, where his mathematics belongs to the realm of theology. Focussing on the meaning of the numbers with respect to the biblical hermeneutics, we first trace the mathematical background of Augustinus, and then rediscover his mathematical theology by interpreting his master works such as Confessiones, De Trinitate, De civitate Dei, De Genesi ad litteram, De libero arbitrio, De vera religione, De doctrina christiana. The satisfiable models including God as the infinite, mathematical creation, and seminum numeri as latentes numeri could imply that Augustinus was working on a mathematico-theological network which seems to be adequate for the Christian model of cognition, much better than that of Pythagorean and Platonic tradition.
