오늘날 사회는 심화한 양극화가 만든 혐오와 분열, 갈등과 적대가 일상적이다. 이것을 극복하기 위한 각계의 노력은 점차 학문적 탐구로도 이어지고 있다. 이러한 배경에서 등장한 학제 간 학문이 화해학(Reconciliation Studies)이다. 화해학은 화해라는 개념을 연구하고, 갈등ㆍ분쟁 당사자들 사이를 연결하여 대화를 촉진하며, 화해에 도달하기 위한 다양한 접근법을 개발하고 독려함을 목적으로 삼는 학제 간 연구 분야다. 화해학이 말하는 화해는 정의(justice), 용서, 기억, 치유, 정체성 등 다양한 내용과 복잡한 과정을 포함하는 지속적인 논쟁의 과정이라고 할 수 있다. 이러한 논의를 바탕으로 이 글은 종교가 갈등을 유발하기도 하지만 동시에 화해의 유용한 자원이 될 수 있다는 사실에 주목하고, 종교 전통이 화해의 과정에서 수행하는 역할을 읽으려는 학문적 흐름이 있음을 지적하였다. 그리고 화해에 있어서 종교의 긍정적 혹은 부정적 역할, 화해의 종교적 차원, 종교와 화해의 상호작용을 탐색하는 일련의 연구들은 ‘종교화해학(Religious Reconciliation Studies)’이라는 이름으로 부를 것을 제안하였다. 종교화해학은 종교의 자원을 활용하여 정의ㆍ기억ㆍ치유로써 화해를 논의하는 이론과 실천의 틀을 제공하므로, 향후 이 논의의 장이 확대되었으면 하는 바람이다.
Abstract
Contemporary society is characterized by a normalization of hatred, division, conflict, and hostility, all of which have been exacerbated by deepening polarization. Increasingly, calls from various sectors to overcome these issues are being transformed into subjects of academic inquiry. Within this context, the interdisciplinary field, Reconciliation Studies, has emerged. Reconciliation Studies seeks to explore the concept of reconciliation, foster dialogue among parties involved in conflicts and disputes, and develop and encourage diverse approaches toward achieving reconciliation. The notion of reconciliation, as understood in this field, encompasses a complex and ongoing process of contestation involving justice, forgiveness, memory, healing, and identity. Building upon this discourse, this article draws attention to the dual role of religion, which can both incite conflict and serve as a valuable resource for reconciliation. It identifies a growing academic interest in examining the role that religious traditions play in reconciliation processes. Furthermore, it proposes that a body of research investigating the positive or negative roles of religion in reconciliation, the religious dimensions of reconciliation, and the interaction between religion and reconciliation be designated as “Religious Reconciliation Studies.” This emerging field offers a theoretical and practical framework that utilizes religious resources to engage with reconciliation through the lenses of justice, memory, and healing. It is hoped that the scope of this discourse will continue to expand in the future.
