초록
This study examines how doctrinal tradition should function in mod- ern theological construction by comparing and analyzing Jürgen Moltmann and Thomas Torrance’s approaches to resolving the fili- oque controversy. Moltmann attempts to resolve the controversy through a relational reinterpretation centered on the concept of perichoresis. He seeks to accommodate both Eastern concerns and Western emphases by understanding the Spirit’s procession in terms of mutual relationships rather than causation. Torrance, in contrast, seeks resolution through reappropriation of Nicene theology, partic- ularly the homoousion doctrine. His approach addresses the legit- imate concerns of both traditions by understanding the Spirit’s procession from the perspective of the one Monarchy of the Triune God. Through this methodological contrast, this study argues that Torrance’s approach of seeking contemporary application through deeper un- derstanding of tradition proves more effective than Moltmann’s at- tempt to reconstruct tradition using modern concepts. Specifically, Torrance’s solution demonstrates how doctrinal tradition can provide both the conceptual precision and flexibility needed for addressing contemporary theological challenges without either mere repetition or distortion. This research suggests that the church’s traditional doc- trine can still play a vital role in modern theological construction, in- dicating the need for deeper understanding and engagement with tradition in theological work.
