초록
Amos Yong, one of the prominent charismatic theologians of the contemporary world and a well-acknowledged scholar in Spirit Christology, sought to resolve the neglect in the history of Western theology in relation to the Person and work of the Holy Spirit. Yong suggests that Pneumatology can provide a theological base to hold Christological issues in abeyance to further dialogue with other faiths and rectify the gap caused by Western theology. Thus, he develops an independent mission of the Spirit from the Son and steadily argues for the relative independence of the Spirit’s economic mission. In so doing, Yong rejects the concept of the Filioque, focuses on Irenaeus’ conception of Spirit and Son as the Father’s two Hands, and adopts the Eastern idea of the procession, which states that the Spirit proceeds from the Father alone. Although Yong’s concern was to emphasize the distinct economies of the Spirit and the Word and the universal work of the Spirit, his theology was exclusively Pneuma-centric. This emphasis unwittingly limits the human nature of Jesus and undermines the missionary activity of the economic Trinity. Furthermore, Yong’s Spirit Christology model weakens Christ’ deity, His pre-existence and unique salvific role in this world, and creates a religion of the Spirit. In addition, his proposal lacks the personhood of the Spirit and carries the elements of binitarianism, Pneumacentrism, inclusivism, and pluralistic approaches. This proposal also questions the authenticity of the Trinitarian understanding of the Son and the Spirit. Therefore, it is necessary to carefully investigate proper theological Christology to avoid erroneous elements in contemporary Christian theology. Thus, this paper aims to explore Amos Yong’s Spirit Christology model and draws evaluation from the evangelical Trinitarian perspective. [
Abstract
