Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors affecting fear of crime and avoidance behavior among adolescents. Especially the effects of parents’ altruistic fear of crime on their children. To do this, I used data from Korean Crime Victim Survey in 2014 of Korean Institute of Criminology. In order to examine the effects of parents’ altruistic fear of crime on their children, I extracted the teenage who were supposed to be influenced by their parents. As for the results of the study, vulnerability, direct crime victimization, indirect crime victimization, social incivility, community attachment, collective efficacy, and parents’ altruistic fear of crime were influencing fear of crime. Fear of crime, gender, and altruistic fear of crime were influential factors in avoidance behavior. Next, gender comparisons were made on the factors influencing fear of crime and avoidance behavior. There was no gender difference affecting the fear of crime. On the other hand, for male adolescents, indirect crime victimization affects avoidance behavior. For female adolescents, parents’ altruistic fear of crime affects avoidance behavior.
