Abstract

The theological discourses of body and the incarnate body of God tend to be rarely related to the everyday human body. In this vein, this study suggests an interdisciplinary understanding of the body and flesh, especially based on feminist theological and humanistic theoretical findings of bodiliness, materiality and textuality of body, articulating the bodily reality and corporeality within the discursive practices. Therefore, this thesis seeks a theological opinion of the ‘God-became-body’ that inflects Christology with recent humanistic explorations of body, flesh, and corporeality, for the sake of a soter- iological embodiment of all human and nonhuman beings. Although the body is the very place in which the divine is incarnated, bodily experiences are downplayed in theological discourses, which often abstracts the bodily and corporeal reality from its constructive relationality. The incarnate gospel that ‘the Word became flesh’, that is, corporeal reality, was overlaid by the 4th century theologian Athanasius with the doctrine that God became a man, resulting in the absence of body discourse in Christianity. In this context, this feminist perspective examines the theological implications of the meaning of the God’s becoming-flesh and bodiliness of God-incarnate Christ. Toward this end, this study stages a transdisciplinary theological en- counter between the contemporary theologians and humanistic un- derstandings of Word, body and flesh. Thereby this suggests an alter- native reading of the body and the incarnation, suggesting a diverse perspectives of corporeality, materiality, relationality, and textuality of body that proffers the dynamic relationality within the doctrine of the incarnate God. A reconfiguration of the carnal corporeality and the permeable relationality between the divine and the human within the incarnate God opens a possibility for women and men to experience God’s illimitable incarnate presence in the present tense.
