Abstract
The nature of human existence―particularly the relationship be- tween mind and brain, soul and body― has long been a shared con- cern of Christian theology and modern science. While traditional Christian anthropology has often been shaped by dualistic frame- works, ancient Hebrew thought understood the human as a unified, holistic being. In the contemporary context, neuroscience and evolu- tionary theory increasingly challenge Cartesian dualism and promote reductive physicalism, reducing consciousness to neural mechanisms. However, emergentist approaches go beyond both dualism and re- ductionism, proposing that mind and consciousness emerge from the brain’s complexity as causal, autonomous realities. This paper ex- plores biblical anthropology alongside emergence theory, dual-aspect monism, and non-reductive physicalism to present a vision of human nature that fosters constructive dialogue between theology and science.
