Abstract
Sofia Gubaidulina is a notable woman composer in comtemporary music who created her own compositional method. Her music is characterized by unusual combinations of instruments, the use of symbolic features in her work to show her religious beliefs, and the use of various numerical sequences such as the Fibonacci series and the Golden ratio in her music. Gubaidulina believes that rhythm is the most important musical element in composition, and uses various number sequences to develop rhythmic ideas and decide the ovrall structure of her pieces, an approach that she calls the ‘Rhythm of Form.’ This paper will analyze Gubaidulina’s Quasi Hoquetus composed in 1984, based on her compositional sketch and will uncover how Gubaidulina applies numerical sequences to build rhythmic ideas and form to gain insight into various compositional methods.
