Abstract

A musical work has a lot of expressive potential. The interpretation of a work entails finding cues and explicating them in a specific direction. The purpose of this article is to investigate the topics and gestures in musical works, and their blended meaning, tropes. A piano piece, Chaconne, by the Russian composer Sofia Gubaidulina was selected to investigate this aim. The relationship and emotional meaning of the title ‘chaconne’ and the old ostinato bass ‘lamento’ are explored as well as the ‘bell motif,’ an important topic in Russian music, and the military, which has a long history in the music. The entanglement of these topics convey violence and tragedy in a lively manner. Furthermore, aspects of the grotesque in this work are discussed. This interpretation stems from the fact that long periods of social repression in Russian history have produced music of symbolic character.
