본 논문은 쇼스타코비치(Dmitri Shostakovich)의 오페라 <코(The Nose)>를 연구 대상으로 삼고 음악에서의 그로테스크 의미를 파악하고자 하였다. 이탈리아어 동굴(grotta)에서 유래한 그로테스크(grotesque)는 기이한 장식이나 기괴한 문양, 왜곡된 형태를 묘사하는 단어로 사용되었고, 18세기부터 미술과 문학에서 미적 개념으로 논의되었다. 오페라 <코>는 고골(Nikolai Gogol)의 동명 소설 『코』처럼 러시아의 그로테스크를 대변하는 작품이다. 특히 <코>에서는 리듬의 감각적 사용과 과장된 음악의 표현 그리고 러시아어의 특징을 고려한 리얼리즘 성격으로 그로테스크를 표현했다. 이 그로테스크의 속성은 바흐친이 주장한 것처럼, 웃음과 풍자 그리고 진지함 등 유쾌한 풍요로움을 선사하고 공감을 일으켰다. 더불어 음악에서도 독자적인 그로테스크 논의가 필요하다는 것을 확인할 수 있었다.
Abstract
This study aims to discuss the musical grotesque in Dmitri Shostakovich’s The Nose. The term grotesque, which comes from Italian grotta (cave), is used to describe strange shapes such as weird ornaments, incongruous patterns, and distorted forms. The grotesque has been interpreted as a kind of an aesthetic concept in art and literature since the 18th century. The Nose, based on the story of the same title by Nikolai Gogol, is representative of Russian grotesque in opera. The opera has the grotesque components such as the rhythmic ostinato, the exaggerated musical expression, and the realistic characteristics of Russian language. These features represent laughter, satire, and seriousness and embody the joyful lavishness stressed by Mikhail Bakhtin. Furthermore, I argue that more focused discussion about the grotesque is necessary in music.
