Abstract
Death of Salesman deals with the anxiety and suicide of a salesman during the Great depression in the United States. This play presents images of reality and hallucination on the stage at the same time. According to J. Lacan, hallucination is illusion of the ego’s narcissism. Moreover, J.-P. Sartre argues that hallucination is an analogon of the imaginary without essence. This study explores the visual image of hallucination represented on the stage based on Lacan’s psychoanalysis and Sartre’s aesthetics. In order to address this issue, the different meanings of images and the imaginary in Lacan and Sartre are examined. I then examine why the hallucinations were produced and the ways in which they are re-produced and the process through which they are delivered to the recipient. These two theories are connected by human desire. By analyzing the hallucinations enacted on stage through a connection with desire, this thesis seeks to broaden the scope of images, and create a debate with multiple perspectives. In the visual bombardment of the modern world, the production and delivery of images become ever more varied. This phenomenon requires that studies of images go beyond the tangible image to a more multidimensional examination. This study examines the ontological and epistemic aspects of the imagery of desire in this context.
