이 글은 다큐멘터리 영화에서 목소리가 기표로서의 기능 이외에 청각 요소로서 활용됨으로서 변화, 확장되는 다큐멘터리의 표현 가능성을 2010년 이후에 제작된 한국 독립 다큐멘터리에 나타난 사례를 통해 살펴본다. 유성영화, 더 정확히는 발화영화의 등장 이후 주류 내러티브 영화는 말 중심으로 발전했고 이는 다큐멘터리에서는 더욱 극대화되어 나타났다. 한국의 독립 다큐멘터리는 주류 미디어에서 배제된 계층과 그들의 목소리를 대변하는 수단의 성격을 갖고 출발하여 이야기하는 주체와 이야기의 내용이 주요한 요소였다. 최근 10년간 제작된 다큐멘터리 중에는 그 이전에 기록과 전달이라는 첫 번째 기능에 가려 상대적으로 간과되었던 정서적 표현을 강조하는 다큐멘터리가 부쩍 눈에 띄고 있다. 이 경향의 구체적이고 형식적인 특징 한 가지가 오랜 동안 표현 수단에서 독보적 위치를 차지해온 텍스트로서의 목소리의 위상 변화이다. 지배적인 표현 방식이었던 목소리의 중요도가 낮아지고 다른 표현요소와 동등하게 사용되거나 목소리의 음색, 어조 등의 비언어적 측면을 활용하는 사례가 눈에 띈다. 본고는 2010년 이후 등장한 한국 독립 다큐멘터리 중 서사 전달보다 감각적인 경험의 제공을 통해 메세지를 전달하는 다큐멘터리를 분석해보고 그 안에서 목소리가 의미 전달의 도구 외에 청각 요소로서 활용되는 사례를 중점적으로 살펴볼 것이다. 이를 통해 영화에 일어나는 형식적 변화와 더불어 제작 방식에 있어 감독과 대상과의 관계 설정 및 그것이 관객에게 전달하는 효과를 함께 고찰해 보고자 한다.
Abstract
Use of the voice in documentary has been much focused on its function as a signifier. Having begun and developed in a close tie with social movement, this 'verbocentrism' of has been strongly deployed in dominating style of Korean independent documentary. Although they have gone through significant changes by overturning the conventional relationship between the filmmaker and the subject, and giving those who had been excluded from mainstream media the opportunity to speak for themselves, the important issues in Korean documentary have long been 'who' the speakers are and 'what' they say. Since late 2000s, we have been seeing increasing number of documentaries seeking more to create sensory and emotional experience than to disclosure the facts. In the documentaries with this tendency, the dominating position of the voice among the audio-visual elements appear demoted, and non-verbal qualities of the voice such as tone, timbre and nuance are used to the significantly increased extent. This can be interpreted as a respond of documentary to the need for new way of communication under the present sociocultural circumstances as well as a result of cross-genre practice of divers visual arts. This paper illuminates the potential of voice in documentary not only as a signifier but as a sound element through the examples among Korean documentary films made after 2010. It examines how verbocentrism has evolved in Korean documentaries and how it is being challenged recently. The distinctiveness of the recent Korean documentaries in which the voice is used different ways will be studied in terms of style, effect towards the audience, and the connection in the documentary tradition in Korea. It finally examines how different use of voice influences the relation between the filmmaker and the subject during the production and vice versa.
