이 연구는 한국 독립 다큐멘터리에서 현장의 의미와 그것을 다루는 방식의 변화에 주목한다. 과거 한국 독립 다큐멘터리는 사회 운동과 연대하면서 사회적 이슈가 발발하는 현장과 기민하게 결합했다. 하지만 정치적, 사회적, 문화적, 기술적 환경의 변화로 인해서 한국 독립 다큐멘터리에서현장이 의미하는 바가 달라졌다. 이를 확인하기 위해 이 연구는 한국 독립 다큐멘터리가 현장에개입하는 방식을 중심으로 현장-기반의 다큐멘터리, 현장-전유의 다큐멘터리, 현장-창출의 다큐멘터리로 구분해서 서술한다. 현장-기반의 다큐멘터리는 액티비즘을 지향하는 다큐멘터리에서 주로나타나는 방식으로 사회적 이슈가 발발하는 현장을 기록하고 그곳에서 벌어지는 사건을 연출자의 시선으로 재현한다. 현장-전유의 다큐멘터리는 수행적 다큐멘터리나 에세이영화처럼 지배적인질서에 저항하면서 현장의 의미를 전복시키거나 사건 발생 현장을 주관적으로 성찰한다. 현장-창출의 다큐멘터리는 현장의 범위를 물리적 세계에서 가상적 세계로 확장하는 것으로, 애니메이션다큐멘터리나 파운드 푸티지처럼 주관적, 픽션적, 가상적 세계를 탐구한다. 이처럼 한국 독립 다큐멘터리에서 현장의 의미는 고정적이지 않고 유동적이다. 사회적 이슈에 개입하고 사회적 의제를 제시하는 모든 한국 독립 다큐멘터리는 저마다의 현장을 각기 다른 방식으로 전유한다.
Abstract
This paper focuses on changes in the meaning of the site and the way it is handled in Korean independent documentaries. To confirm this, the study is divided into site-based documentaries, site-appropriated documentaries, and site-generated documentaries, focusing on the way Korean independent documentaries intervene in the site. The site-based documentary focuses on recording the site where social issues occur in a way that usually appear in activism-oriented documentaries and representing the events that take place there from the perspective of the director. Site-appropriated documentaries subvert the meaning of the site or reflect on the site subjectively, while resisting the dominant order, such as performative documentaries and essay films. Site-generated documentaries extend the scope of the site from physical to virtual, exploring subjective, fictional, and virtual worlds like animated documentaries and found footage. As such, the meaning of the site in the Korean independent documentary is not fixed but fluid. The Korean independent documentary, which intervenes in social issues and presents social agendas, is unique in its own way.
