본 연구에서는 <성실한 나라의 앨리스>에 접근하는 키워드로서 제목, 신자유주의 경제체제 그리고 집을 선택했다. 영화의 제목은 기발하면서도 역설적인 상황을 내포한다. ‘성실’을 덕목이자 가치로 여기는 사회에서 성실은 행복을 추동해야 마땅한데, 오히려 ‘성실의 역설’이 작용하면서 행복은 더욱 멀어진다. 신자유주의 경제체제에서의 노동과 빈곤이라는 키워드는 노동수익률보다 자본수익률의 증가가 월등하여 양극화가 심화되었음을 주장한 피케티(T. Piketty) 이론의 영화적 수용이다. 주인공 수남이 아무리 열심히 일해도 물가와 집값은 소득보다 더 빠르게 상승하고 내 집 마련의 꿈은 멀어지는 상황에서 ‘성실’이 수남에게 가져다준 것은 좌절과 분노 그리고 광기였다. 집이라는 키워드를 통해서는 우리 사회의 물신적 강박을 건드린다. 우리 사회에서 집은 늘 중산층과 서민들의 욕망의 기표이자 목적지였다. 거주공간으로서의 의미 외에도 자산증식의 경제적 수단으로서, 나아가 계급의 욕망이 투영된 상징적 의미로서 집은 언제나 욕망의 대상이자 그 자체였다. 이 영화는 거칠고 난폭하게 우리 시대, 우리 사회의 현상들을 장르적 혼종 속에 담아내고 있다. 특히 신자유주의 경제체제라는 프레임과 디플레이션 현상 속에서 성실한 노동은 안락과 행복의 정(正)의 함수가 아니며 오히려 시간이 흐를수록 역(逆)의 관계에 있음을 코믹잔혹판타지의 장르적 혼종 속에 담아낸다. 그래서 이 영화를 채우는 질료로서의 성실한 노동은 피칠갑과 분열증으로 되돌아온다. <성실한 나라의 앨리스>는 2015년 한국사회의 자장 안에 있고, 또 그럼으로써 더욱 의미와 무게를 갖는 작품이다.
Abstract
This research chose Neo-liberalism Economy and 'house' as the key words in approaching Alice in Earnestland. The title of the film connotates a rather brilliant yet ironic situation. In a society where 'earnestness' and 'hard work' are automatically considered a virtue and quality, it is obvious that one's earnestness should guarantee happiness. However, happiness only gets far away when the 'paradox of earnestness' starts acting its magic. In a Neo-liberalism Economy, labor and poverty are this movie's way of representing Thomas Piketty's thoery of social polarization arising from rate of return on capital being greater than economic growth. This movie is about Soonam, a woman whose hard work isn't paying her back enough. Growth rate of the economy is faster than her return, and her dream of having her own house is only getting further away. This situation only brought her frustration, anger, and madness. This movie utilizes key word 'house' to touch upon our society's fetish on things. 'House' is the signifier of status, and dream to all ordinary people. It is more than a place to live in. House is also a tool to invest in your wealth, and even a symbol that represents a certain class' greed. This movie coarsely and violently portrays the current society by combining different genre's. The uniquely stated genre of this movie, 'comic blood & gore fantasy' does a great job of depicting a society where hard work and happiness can actually be x and y axis of inversely proportional function. In the end, earnest hard work by Soonam gives back a return of blood-shed schizophrenia.
