대중매체 속에서의 미술작품 해석과 서술에 대한 고찰: 소설과 영화 <다 빈치 코드>에 나타난 레오나르도 다 빈치의 작품들을 중심으로

올해로 서거 500주년을 맞이하는 레오나르도 다 빈치(1452-1519)는 이탈리아 르네상스를 대표하는 예술가로 흔히 잘 알려져 있다. 그런데 사 실 그는 우리가 지금 생각하는 예술가라기보다는 발명가, 군사전문가, 무 기제조자, 해부학자, 식물학자, 천문학자, 음악가, 요리사 등 실로 광범위 한 영역에서 창의적인 활동을 벌인 일종의 근대적 선각자라고 스스로에 대해 생각하고 있었다. 그의 방대한 기록들과 스케치는, 20여 점이 채 되 지도 않는 그의 회화 완성작과 비교해보더라도 이 점을 충분히 증명해준 다. 레오나르도는 특히 평생에 걸쳐 자연과학의 여러 분야에 관심을 가지 고 연구에 깊이 몰두했으며, 인체와 생명의 신비에 대해서도 근대의 과학 적 태도로 접근하고 규명하려고 노력했다. 그런데 소설 다 빈치 코드는 레오나르도의 작품을 반기독교적 도상으로 해석하며, 기존의 미술사 서술 과는 대치되는 주장을 펼친다. 이와 관련된 여러 분야에서 소설의 오류들 을 반박해왔으나, 본 연구에서는 소설이 다루는 주요 작품 중에서 ≪비트 루비우스의 인체비례≫가 갖는 근대과학의 의미와 더불어, ≪모나리자≫ 와 ≪최후의 만찬≫의 도상과 의미 규명을 통해 그의 작품들이 지닌 미술 사적 위치를 재점검하고자 한다.
Abstract
At the quincentenary of Leonardo da Vinci's death this year, he needs to be re-evaluated more than as an artist we would usually think: as an inventor, militarist, armorer, anatomist, botanist, astronomer, musician, cook as he recognized himself. In fact, Leonardo had performed his creation in extensive fields. It is simply proved with his enormous records and sketches in comparison to his completed paintings less than 20 works. Particularly, through his entire life, Leonardo devoted himself to the investigation of many areas in natural science, and attempted to figure out the mystery of human body and life with modern scientific mind and attitude. Insisting confrontational claims against academic results in art historical discipline, however, Dan Brown's worldly best-selling novel and movie, The Da Vinci Code, interprets Leonardo's works as antichristianism. Art works of the past, I believe, should be examined and clarified in the basis on accurate sources and facts. At the 500 anniversary years after Leonardo da Vinci's death, I feel an obligation to research and clarify the genuine facts around art. Since the author’s brand new interpretations on Leonardo’s works are due to the different suggestions of their backgrounds, there are numerous books published to confute the religious faults. Therefore, this research focuses on comparing Brown’s alleged claims with the “canonical” interpretations of art by reputable art historians. By cracking details of what Brown stated, this study is expected to reach the truths and to serve to those who want to enjoy the genuine truths in art and literature.
