이 글은 국내 영상미디어운동의 본격적 시초로서 1980년대 비제도권 영화운동의 이론과 실천을 돌아보고자 한다. 1980년대는 영화를 상품 또는 단순한 예술 작품으로 보는 것이 아니라 사회모순을 변혁하려는 운동의 일환으로 보았던 ‘영화운동’이라는 개념이 대학가를 중심으로 등장하고 민주화 항쟁과 노동자 대투쟁을 거치며 빠르게 확산된 시기로서, 이후 영상미디어운동은 다양한 변화와 실험을 거듭하며 오늘날까지 그 흐름을 이어가고 있다. 영화문화의 진보와 사회 전체의 진보를 영화인이 함께 고민, 해결해나가야 한다고 보았던 진보적 영화인들은 ‘영화’라는 매체의 목적과 개념, 존재 방식에 대해 기존 영화계와는 다른 관점과 해석을 보여주며 영화를 제작, 배급, 상영, 비평, 이론화하는 방식에도 많은 변화를 가져왔다. 이러한 경험은 영화를 바라보는 영화인들의 눈을 크게 확장시켰으며 이후 한국영화 및 영상 문화를 양적, 질적으로 성장시키는 데 큰 자양분이 되어주었다. 1980년대 영화운동의 가장 큰 의의는 영화라는 매체의 사회적 역할과 존재방식에 대해 다양한 방식으로 문제를 제기하며 ‘영화’라는 개념 자체를 근본적으로 성찰, 재고찰하도록 만들었다는 데 있을 것이다. 그리고 그러한 문제의식은 제도권 영화와 비제도권 영화, 그리고 각각의 영역에서 상영되는 큰 영화(상업영화)와 작은 영화라는 이분법적 구도에서처럼 주류영화에 대한 철저한 공간적, 내용적, 매체적 분리에 대한 의지라는 형태로 나타났다. 본 글은 영화라는 미디어 기술의 민주화와 급진적 재발명이라는 측면에서 1980년대 비제도권 영화운동의 성과와 한계에 대해 고찰한다.
Abstract
This paper examines the theories and practices of non-institutional film movement in the 1980s as the substantial beginning of visual media movement in Korea. In the 1980s, the idea of film movement which considered film not just a commodity nor an art work but a way of engaging in social change appeared throughout the universities and spread quickly after the June Civil Uprising and Great Struggle of Workers in 1987. Progressive film people tried to differ themselves from the established film world in their view of the purpose, concept, and the mode of existence of the film medium, which led to their experiments in the way of producing, distributing, exhibiting, evaluating and theorizing film. Their activities had great impact in widening people’s perception on film, thus providing an important asset to the qualitative as well as quantitative development of Korean film and visual culture afterwards. The most significant achievement of the 1980’s non-institutional film movement perhaps lies in that it made people to reconsider the concept of film itself in a fundamental way, questioning its social functions and mode of existence in a diverse way. This appeared in its commitment to divide from mainstream cinema in terms of space, content, as well as medium itself, making a distinction between institutional cinema and non-institutional cinema. This paper discusses the achievements and limitations of 1980s extra-institutional film movement in terms of democratization and radical reinvention of the film medium.
