초록

The term ‘intertextuality’ was first introduced in the 1960s as Julia Kristeva’s translation of Mikhail Bakhtin’s dialogism. What is the intertextuality? A text’s relationship to other texts is its intertextuality. The specific texts it draws on for its meaning are its intertext. There are a number of ways in which films can construct intertextuality and this necessarily includes both the text as intertextual source and the spectator’s constructions. According to Patrick Fuery, there are four methods. These include : (1) structural reference; (2) thematic reference; (3) synecdochic structures; (4) mosaic formations. In one sense genre almost inevitably establishes and relies on a type of structural intertextuality as films observe the conventions of the form. One of the factors which allows an intertextual reference to operate is the diachronics of the films. Structural intertextuality is often closely tied to thematic references- that is, when films refer to other films at the level of narrative themes and events. In the operation of synecdoche, the intertextuality is formed through the part of one film relating to a much larger order, including another film in its entirety, or a filmic form. For example, Hitchcock’s brief appearance in his specific film operates as a synecdochic formed intertextual reference for all of Hitchcock’s films. There is a certain type of intertextuality which is formulated not through a system of referential processes, but an mixing of components of films and their contingent elements. This called mosaic formations. In this thesis, I apply these terms and methods to some Korean films. First of all, I select and analyze the film, Jealousy is My Name directed by Park Chanok, which deal with the betrayal of love between two men and a woman. In this film there are many references to other Korean films, that is, to Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance directed by Park Chanwuk and Virgin Stripped Bare by Her Bachelors directed by Hong Sangsoo. After then, I choose and analyze the trilogy, that is, This Charming Girl(2004), Love Talk(2005), and Ad Lib Night(2006) directed by Lee Yoonki. Following a journey of a woman of obscure inner state, his third film, Ad Lib Night, reminds of his previous films. I think that these three films are very closely connected each other. Therefore, my main task is to identify the intertextuality operating in his trilogy.

Abstract

This called mosaic formations. In this thesis, I apply these terms and methods to some Korean films.
