Abstract
Performance art finds its own place within the hierarchical operation of the art-historical machine, by claiming its medium-specificity based on the living body of the artist. The body is time-bound and cannot be present in multiple places at once. This particular medium- specificity is regarded as securing presentness as performance art's ontological ground. In this context, this article pays attention to the phenomenon that historical performances of the 1960s and 70s have been being re-enacted in major Western museums since the 2000s. By analysing the historicized body in these re-enactment performances, whose temporality cannot be fixed within the ideological distinction between the past and the present, I will examine how the linear conception of time becomes ruptured. In doing so, I argue that it is in this rupture that we can articulate the new ontology of performance.
