공연예술은 인간의 신체 동작과 표정을 기반으로 이루어지는 표현 행위로, 매체에의 고정을 수반하지 않는다. 공연예술은 공연이 이루어지는 바로 그 순간에 그곳에서만 유일하게 존재하는 것으로, 그 자체를 온전하게 보존하기는 실제로 불가능하다. 역설적이게도 이런 상황은 공연예술 종사자로 하여금 공연 현장을 어떻게 남기고 보존할 수 있을 것인가에 관심을 가지도록 만들었다. 공연 현장의 충실한 기록을 위해서 실제로 공연에 대한 글쓰기, 사진이나 영상의 제작과 같은 다양한 방법들이 시도된 것은 이미 오래 전의 일이다. 이 가운데에서도 영상은 움직임과 소리를 모두 기록으로 고정시키는 일이 가능해서, 공연을 대체하는 유력한 수단으로써 각광을 받아왔다. 특히 최근의 발달된 미디어 환경은 공연 영상을 단순한 현장의 기록이라는 차원을 넘어서 다양한 테크놀로지와 결합된 새로운 예술 영역으로 스스로를 진화시키면서 그 활용의 가능성을 넓히고 있다. 이 글은 공연과 관련해서 생산되는 다양한 종류의 영상들의 특성을 그 존재론적 함의와 연관시켜서 분석하기 위한 시론적인 접근이다. 공연을 기록하는 행위는 공연 현장에서의 배우와 무용수의 움직임을 기계적으로 기록하고 재생하는 역할 뿐만 아니라 기록의 궁극적인 객체인 공연이라는 예술 행위에 내재된 고유한 메시지와 울림을 어떻게 남길 수 있을 것인가라는 결코 쉽지 않은 문제를 포함하고 있다. 이 글에서는 이런 다양한 종류의 공연 영상을 공연이라는 객체를 충실하게 재현하고 복제하는 데 관심을 두고 있는 공연과 기록의 관계, 단순한 기록을 넘어서 기록된 콘텐츠를 활용해서 관객에게 미적 감흥과 울림을 전달하려는 기록과 관객 사이의 관계를 중심으로 재구성하여 그 각각의 특성과 가능성, 한계를 그 존재론적 함의와 연관하여 살펴본다.
Abstract
As intrinsically expressive acts based on human body movements and facial expressions, the performing arts do not attach naturally to fixed media. It is indeed impossible to preserve the integrity of a work of performance art as it exists in the moment the performance takes place. For a long time, various means, such as writing about performances and producing photographs and images, have been used in order to faithfully record performances. Video recording has been spotlighted as a powerful means of recording, and even replacing live performances, as it makes it possible to fix both movement and sound in its record. Today’s rapidly evolving media environment is expanding the use of video into new art forms that integrate various technologies beyond the record of the scene of a performance. This paper makes a tentative effort to analyze the characteristics of various kinds of images produced to capture the performance arts and their ontological implications. The recording of performances not only mechanically records and reproduces the movements of actors and dancers, but captures a unique message and resonance inherent in the artistic performance that persists as its ultimate artifact. This raises problems that are never easy to resolve. In this article, we reconstruct the relationship between the record and the audience and examine the characteristics, possibilities, limitations, and ontological implications of an array of forms of recorded performance art.
