뉴스릴 전쟁 - 한국전쟁 초기 미국의 뉴스릴과 <리버티 뉴스>의 탄생 -

Abstract

This paper examines what sort of public information policy and programs using films were formed by U. S. government and how they were performed or transformed in the field during the Korean War through analysing declassified official documents and newsreels in National Archives and Records Administration. United States Information Service in Korea, the existing overseas information agency, played a key role in the psychological warfare instead of U. S. Army and U. N. Forces with week bases of psychological warfare due to the sudden entry in the early stages of the war. With the war newsreel films, USIS tried to describe U. S. involvement into the war as the humanitarian intervention against communist’s brutal aggression and to engrave their readership on people’s minds all over the world. For all that, the public information film policy was transformed due to the circumstances rather than was coherent and systemic in the early stages of the war as seen through the official documents among the film branches under the State Department, the Department of the Army, U. N., and General Headquarters, the Supreme Commander for the Allied Power. USIS Korea, having had irregular newsreels made by Korean film makers during the U. S. Military Occupation, established Liberty Production to cope with the urgent demand of warfare and then regularly issued its original newsreel label, the Liberty News.
